Background: Chinese medicine used Burdock root, with other herbs, to treat symptoms of measles, tonsillitis, sore throats, gout, fevers, kidney stones, and the common cold. In Japan, it is eaten as a vegetable. Burdock has also been used to detoxify blood and eliminate waste. Today, it is sometimes used to treat cancer.
Diuretic: The Burdock root is a primary source to treat rheumatism, gout and dropsy. Also useful to treat diabetes and as a blood purifier. Kidneys also benefit when Burdock is taken several times a day.
Antibacterial: Poultices made from Burdock are used in the treatment of bruises and burns. Lactone is the active ingredient in Burdock when used as an antibacterial ointment. Acne is also said to improve with use of Burdock.
Antifungal: Burdock is used to treat skin diseases and fungal infections. It can be effective when applied to skin tumors. Psoriasis and eczema symptoms are lessened by the use of a Burdock preparation.
Burdock is also used as an antibiotic and antiseptic - and is very helpful when disorders of this nature are due to toxicity. New research shows promise as an anti-tumor medication.
* Tincture (1:5): 2 - 8 mL three times per day; the tincture may also be applied to a cloth and wrapped around affected skin area or wound
* Fluid extract (1:1): 2 - 8 mL three times a day
* Tea: 2 - 6 grams steeped in 500 mL water (about 2 cups), three times per day
Topical preparations of burdock are also used for skin problems (such as eczema) and wounds.
Do not take in large quantities of Burdock or if you have persistent diarrhea.
