GRASS-FED
Cows were meant to eat grass, not grain. But nearly all milk producers, including those that sell 100% Certified Organic, exclusively feed their cows grain. Studies are currently underway on the health benefits of dairy products produced from the milk of grass-fed cows. This much is known: grass-fed dairy products contain an increased amount of CLA (conjugated linoleic acid). Nearly six times as much.
Most cartons of milk in the
supermarket show a picture of
cow contentedly grazing on
grass. Unfortunately, 85% to
95% of the cows in the United
States are now being raised in
confinement not on pasture.
The reason for confining cows
in feed lots and feeding them
grain rather than grass is
that they produce more milk.
Today's grained cows produce
four times as much milk as the
old family cow of days gone
by.
The truth is: The
less milk a cow produces the
more vitamins in her milk. One
of the biggest losses has been
in its CLA content. CLA or
conjugated linoleic acid is a
type of fat that may prove to
be one of our most potent
cancer fighters. Milk from a
pastured cow can have five
times as much CLA as a
grain-fed animal.
Milk
from pastured cows also
contains an ideal ration of
essential fatty acids or
omega-6 and omega-3 fatty
acids. Studies suggest that if
your diet contains roughly
equal amounts of these two
fats, you have a low risk of
cancer, cardiovascular
disease, allergies and
diabetes. The process in
production is called
Pasteurized This means we
eliminate any pathogenic
microorganisms by bringing the
milk to a temperature of no
more then 165* F a temperature
proven to remove any risk of
harmful microbes. But its not
a temperature so high that it
renders the mil sterile and
possible reduces any inherent
nutritional value. Other milk
producers use a process called
Ultra-Pasteurize. This process
not only removes bacteria, but
by bringing the milk to a
temperature of 280* F it
renders the milk so sterile it
remains usable for 55 days!
Sounds fresh to you?
We don't think so! Even
an organic label is no
guarantee that the cows grazed
on pasture. That is why we
emphasize on our label Fresh
Grass-Fed. The cows that
produce our milk are raised on
healthy grass fed diets on the
nearby farms of Amish and
Mennonite families located in
southeastern Pennsylvania.
Now thats organic!
